Online chat gives people a completely anonymous and private way to ask for help, especially if they are in a busy office or do not feel comfortable picking up the phone. Many people tell us they would not have got in touch with LawCare in any other way.
It is particularly valued by people at the start of their legal careers, who make up around 38% of those using the service. Volunteers play a hugely important role in helping them feel listened to and supported.
Our online chat volunteers
All our volunteers have all worked in law for at least two years and understand the pressures of the legal sector first-hand.
- Volunteers do one regular three-hour weekday shift each week answering online chats on their own computer or laptop. Shifts are 9am to 12pm, 11.30am to 2.30pm and 2pm to 5pm.
- You need to be in a private space where no one else will be able to see their screen. They must be at that screen for the whole shift.
- You’ll need to be comfortable using IT systems and communicating via online chat, so good typing, spelling and grammar skills are helpful.
Volunteering for our online chat is ideal if you’re working on something flexible during your shift and can step away fully when a chat comes in. Online chats last around 45 minutes on average.
We’re also looking for a small number of new helpline volunteers.
Can you help? We’d love to hear from you.
