World Mental Health Day is a great reminder that talking about mental health, both our own and other people’s, really matters.

🌍 Friday 10 October is World Mental Health Day and it’s a great reminder that talking about mental health, both our own and other people’s, really matters.

👂 Worried about a colleague? It’s normal to feel unsure about how to approach the subject, but you don’t need to be an expert to help. A simple “How are you?” or offering to grab a coffee and chat could be the first step towards support. Look out for changes like withdrawal, irritability, or lack of motivation – small signs can speak volumes. Here are some tips:

💬 Keep it positive and supportive.
💬 Be empathetic and listen without judgement.
💬 Ask gentle, open questions.
💬 Avoid phrases like “pull yourself together.”
💬 Signpost them to support — like our free, confidential helpline and peer support.

👩 Leadership and openness matter. When leaders talk openly about mental health and encourage others to do the same, it helps create a culture where people feel safe to speak up and seek support early. Building that openness at every level of an organisation is one of the most powerful ways to support mental health and wellbeing and make our workplaces healthier.
