University Mental Health Day

13 March 2025

Our Trustee, Rachael O'Connor, highlights the importance of everyone playing a role in supporting student wellbeing - whether in law schools, universities, or across the wider legal sector.

So, what could you do to uplift, support, or inspire a law student or aspiring lawyer?

Did you know that 1 in 4 students in higher education in the UK has been formally diagnosed with a mental health condition? This staggering statistic from Student Minds highlights just how crucial it is for all of us to play a role in supporting student wellbeing - whether in law schools, universities, or the wider legal sector.

Our Trustee Rachael O'Connor says a bit more about this in our short video. So, what can you do today to uplift, support, or inspire a law student or aspiring lawyer?

💬 Could you take 15 minutes to have a coffee with a law student who’s interested in joining the profession?

🤝 Could you sign up to be a mentor and guide students as they navigate their legal careers?

🗣️ If you feel safe to do so, could you share your own experiences of mental health and wellbeing in the legal sector?

By working together, we can create a culture where mental health is openly discussed and where students feel supported, rather than held back, by their challenges.

If you’re in the legal profession, we also encourage you to engage with LawCare’s Life in the Law research, which explores the mental health and wellbeing across the sector. Your insights can help shape a healthier and more supportive industry.

Let’s work together to ensure that no student is held back by their mental health - because mental health matters at every stage of a legal career.
