This insightful webinar explored the impact of menopause in the legal sector.

Our panel - Lucie AllenSara Carnegie, Silvia van den Bruel, and Russell Johnstone - discussed the importance of menopause awareness, shared personal stories, and highlighted key research findings. They also reviewed what firms are doing to support employees and outlined the essential baseline of support and education needed across the legal sector.

The session concluded with an Q&A and was introduced by LawCare.

Lucie Allen - Managing Director, BARBRI International

Lucie is an established and energetic leader with over 20 years commercial experience working across a variety of industries and verticals. Lucie spent 7 years at Thomson Reuters prior to joining BARBRI in a global role as vice president in the legal segment where she worked closely with global law firm leaders. Lucie has created organizational structures, built teams, defined propositions and developed successful customer account programmes throughout her career to deliver top line growth. She is recognized for her collaborative approach, influence and ability to execute on her strategic vision. Lucie is passionate about diversity and inclusion advancement in the workplace as well as supporting people with their personal.

Sara Carnegie - Barrister

Sara Carnegie is a barrister and has worked in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors for over 25 years. In addition to client facing work, she has led 2 public inquiries, directed policy and strategy work, advised the senior judiciary and sat as a judge on the Bar Disciplinary Tribunal for 7 years. She is now the legal director at the International Bar Association where she leads a team of lawyers, working with IBA members and external partners on a wide range of global legal projects.

Silvia Van den Bruel - Marketing & BD Director

Silvia leads the marketing & BD efforts for global disputes-only law firm Hausfeld in London and across global projects. She brings some 30 years of experience in both financial and professional services marketing, gained at leading financial institutions in the City, global private equity house Advent International and the Bar. Before joining Hausfeld in 2018, she ran the marketing & BD at leading global funder, Harbour Litigation Funding. As a strategic and creative thinker, she always introduces optimal practical solutions to develop the business and likes to think outside the box. She is vocal about a wide range of DEI matters, including creating awareness around the impact of the menopause and co-authored the “Seven things you need to know about menopause in the workplace” guide and was part of the driving force behind the #menopausematters campaign. She is also the Menopause Ally for her office.

Russell Johnstone - General Counsel, EE and Consumer

Russell leads the legal, risk and compliance teams for the largest consumer business in the UK: BT’s Consumer division (EE, BT and Plusnet) which serves 30 million customers and generates £10bn in annual revenue. 

Starting his career as a media lawyer, Russell joined BT in 2011.  After leading the BT Sport launch, he was appointed General Counsel for BT Consumer in 2015, and then General Counsel for the combined consumer businesses in 2017.

He is Vice Chair of the Social Tech Trust (a social impact investor), a trustee of the Social Mobility Business Partnership (a charity dedicated to improving social mobility in law and finance) and a Board Director of TNT Sports (the UK sports broadcaster).
