Let’s talk about grief and loss

This webinar took place on 7 November 2024 and explored how grief and loss impact those working in the legal sector.

Our specially invited webinar panel comprised Tesse Akpeki Steve Clarke, Mark Hepburn and Lloyd Rees (chair). The panel shared their perspectives and experiences, offering valuable insights into grief and loss in the legal sector.

The image shows a person in clear emotional distress, wiping away tears while holding a pair of glasses, and another person offering comfort by placing a hand on their shoulder. This image strongly conveys the themes of grief, loss, and the importance of support during difficult times. It's a powerful visual representation of the emotions that can arise from grief and the impact it can have on individuals. The supportive gesture from the other person highlights the importance of empathy and care in helping someone through their pain.

Grief and loss are the feelings of sadness and pain that people feel when they lose something or someone important to them. This can happen when someone close to them dies, a pregnancy loss occurs, a relationship ends or a cherished pet dies.

  • Grief can bring up many feelings, like sadness, anger, and sometimes even relief, depending on what’s happening.
  • Grief and loss can significantly impact both work and home life, and a busy, stressful work environment can make these feelings worse.
  • Recognising and addressing the impact of grief is crucial for supporting overall wellbeing and ensuring people working in the legal sector get the support and understanding they need.

The webinar provided an opportunity for participants to deepen their understanding of grief and loss, its impact on mental health, and to learn ways they and their workplaces can better support people who may be experiencing it.
