“Legal professionals at high risk of burnout, 69% have experienced mental ill-health, 1 in 5 bullied, harassed or discriminated against at work.”

We released the findings of our research study Life in the Law in September 2021. The research into wellbeing in the profession captured data between October 2020 and January 2021 from over 1,700 legal professionals in the UK, Republic of Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man.

The aim of the research was to take a snapshot of mental health and wellbeing in the legal profession to help inform future steps the profession must collectively take to improve wellbeing in the sector. Three years on from the launch of the report it is now time to take another look at the sector.

Help us shape Life in the Law 2025

Life in the Law 2025 aims to refine and develop the survey of individual legal professionals used in 2020/ 2021, to provide more in-depth information on specific aspects.

We are holding a series of roundtable discussions and want to hear from a diverse range of voices in the sector to help us shape Life in the Law 2025.

These sessions, facilitated by members of the project team, will review the first Life in the Law survey - covering its scope, questions, and outcomes. We'll also outline our plans for the upcoming survey and discuss potential themes for Life in the Law 2025. The key points raised during these discussions will help shape the topics covered in the new survey.

We know that mental health issues do not discriminate and would welcome your support and input as we work to engage with those working in the sector across the jurisdictions. The aim of the survey is to better understand the impact of the culture and practice of law on the mental health and wellbeing of legal professionals in the UK (including Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man). Our objectives include assessing and identifying key issues impacting mental health and wellbeing within the legal profession and what those current levels are.

Please email [email protected] before 4 September if you would like to join one of our discussions in September or October.

Many thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.
